Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has praised Ghana for its instrumental role in his country’s fight for independence, describing the West African nation as a “pivotal” partner in Zimbabwe’s liberation.

Speaking at a state banquet hosted in his honor by President John Dramani Mahama on April 1, Mnangagwa reflected on Ghana’s contribution as a crucial training ground for Zimbabwean freedom fighters. “Most of my colleagues received training here in Ghana for the armed liberation of Zimbabwe. We are forever grateful to Ghana,” he said.

The banquet marked the start of Mnangagwa’s three-day official visit to Ghana, aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties and exploring new areas for economic and business collaboration.

President Mahama, in his remarks, reiterated Ghana’s commitment to deepening relations with Zimbabwe. He emphasized the longstanding friendship between the two countries and highlighted shared values and historical connections that continue to shape their partnership today.

The event also showcased a cultural exchange, with Mnangagwa receiving traditional Ghanaian fugu and kente cloth, while presenting a gift to President Mahama in return. The symbolic gestures underscored the enduring cultural bonds between the nations.

Both leaders stressed the importance of enhancing trade, investment, and development cooperation, signaling a renewed commitment to building on a relationship rooted in mutual respect and shared history.

Mnangagwa’s visit comes at a time when both countries are exploring ways to boost economic engagement, and the state banquet served as a platform to reinforce diplomatic goodwill and strengthen bilateral ties.
