Road construction works have been blamed for a double fibre cut that disrupted Telecel Ghana services across several communities in the Central Region, affecting an estimated 72,754 subscribers and about 181 Radio Access Network (RAN) sites.

The incident occurred along the Accra-Winneba and Winneba-Cape Coast routes, where excavation works reportedly damaged fibre infrastructure supporting Telecel's network.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, disclosed the disruption in a post on X on Saturday, October 3, 2026, citing information from the National Communications Authority (NCA).

According to the minister, the outage has affected parts of the Winneba and Agona Swedru sectors, coastal and transit corridors, as well as communities around the Kasoa-Weija border.

Affected locations include Winneba, Agona Swedru, Nyakrom, Kwanyako, Apam, Mumford, Otuam, Gomoa Fetteh, Senya Beraku, Mankessim, Assin Fosu, Twifo Praso and Ateiku.

Other affected communities include Awutu Bereku, Bawjiase, Potsin, Jei Krodua, Tuba, Weija, West Hills Mall, Dark Bortianor and Aplaku Bortianor.

“The fibre cuts are a result of work by the road contractor on that stretch of road,” Mr George said.

He added that Telecel engineers had been deployed to the affected areas to repair the damaged infrastructure and restore services, while another team was engaging the road contractor to prevent further excavation from causing additional damage.

The NCA said it would continue to monitor the situation as restoration efforts progressed.

Telecel Ghana has apologised to affected customers and assured them that its engineers are working to restore services as quickly as practically possible.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of telecommunications infrastructure to damage during road construction and the need for closer coordination between utility operators and construction contractors to minimise service disruptions.
