John Dramani Mahama has received a symbolic copy of the United Nations Charter in all six official languages from António Guterres during a meeting in Addis Ababa.
Describing the gesture as “special and meaningful,” President Mahama said the presentation of the UN Charter underscores a shared commitment to multilateralism, peace, and international cooperation. He noted that the gift also reflects the United Nations’ enduring partnership with Africa and Ghana.
The meeting between the two leaders focused on critical issues confronting the African continent, particularly rising security challenges in Africa and the Sahel region. Discussions also emphasized the urgent need to strengthen and consolidate democratic governance across African states.
Regional peace efforts featured prominently in the talks, including concerns over instability within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) countries. President Mahama highlighted the importance of coordinated international and regional support to address the evolving security landscape.
The President expressed gratitude for the UN Secretary-General’s assurance of continued United Nations support as Ghana prepares to assume the African Union chairmanship in 2027. He reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to advancing peace, stability, and democratic principles across the continent.
The meeting signals renewed cooperation between Ghana and the United Nations at a time when Africa faces complex political and security dynamics, reinforcing the role of multilateral engagement in addressing shared global challenges.
