President John Dramani Mahama has directed his office to secure the complete report by The Fourth Estate on the controversial Big Push road projects, after media investigations raised questions about procurement practices under the initiative.
The report by The Fourth Estate highlighted potential irregularities, including the heavy reliance on sole-sourced contracts and allegations of inflated costs. It claimed that Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, authorized 81 sole-sourced contracts worth over GH¢73 billion within a seven-month period.
Speaking during an engagement with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), President Mahama emphasized the need for transparency and accountability. He instructed the Ministry of Roads and Highways to provide a comprehensive response to the allegations, which will guide government action.
“While sole sourcing is legal under specific circumstances in our procurement law, open and transparent tenders are always preferable to ensure competitive pricing and value for money,” he said.
The President added that although preliminary details had appeared in the media, his office will obtain the full report from The Fourth Estate to study the allegations thoroughly.
“We are requesting the Minister for Roads and Highways to present a detailed response to those allegations to inform government’s action,” he stated.
The move signals the administration’s commitment to scrutinize public projects and strengthen oversight in government procurement.
