President John Dramani Mahama has paid glowing tribute to Ghana’s senior citizens, describing them as the foundation of the nation’s progress and reaffirming government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare, pensions, and social protection systems to ensure dignified ageing.

Speaking at the Republic Day Senior Citizens’ Luncheon held at the Presidential Villa in Accra, President Mahama expressed deep appreciation for the lifelong service of elderly citizens across various sectors, noting that their contributions remain central to national development.

He reiterated that government is pursuing economic transformation initiatives under the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme, aimed at expanding economic opportunities, improving livelihoods, and enhancing support systems for retirees and vulnerable groups.

As part of efforts to improve access to healthcare, the President encouraged senior citizens to enrol in the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), which is designed to support treatment for non-communicable diseases and reduce the financial burden on elderly patients.

President Mahama also called for stronger family and community support systems, urging Ghanaians to show greater respect and care for older persons, stressing that dignified ageing must be a shared national responsibility.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving pension structures and expanding social protection programmes to ensure that senior citizens live with security, dignity, and adequate healthcare support after years of service to the country.
