The Bank of Ghana has announced a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening collaboration with the media to improve economic reporting and public understanding.

At the PRINPAG workshop in Ada, Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, in a speech delivered by Dr. Francis Yao Kumah, said the central bank will scale up specialised training programmes for journalists and editors.

The training will focus on monetary policy, foreign exchange operations, payments oversight, financial stability and ethical reporting of market-sensitive information.

The Bank will also establish a dedicated Editors’ and Producers’ Forum, bringing together newsroom leaders to discuss upcoming data releases, policy cycles and emerging financial risks.

According to Dr. Asiama, the forum will help media gatekeepers obtain adequate context before publishing market-moving stories.

In a major incentive for excellence, the Bank announced the launch of the Governor’s “Economic and Financial Story of the Year” Award.

The winning journalist will receive sponsorship to attend the IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings, with selection based on accuracy, depth of analysis, originality, clarity and public impact.

The Governor emphasised that misinformation and de-contextualised reporting can amplify uncertainty, particularly within foreign exchange markets.

He therefore encouraged publishers to strengthen internal verification systems and rely on official data sources.

“When the media succeeds, the public understands — and when the public understands, the economy functions better,” the address stated.

The workshop brought together newspaper publishers, online media operators and financial communicators from across the country.
