The former Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Dr Mark Oliver-Kevor, has stepped down from his position to focus on seeking re-election as the Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dr Oliver-Kevor described the decision as “difficult but necessary,” explaining that it was driven by his commitment to sustaining and strengthening the party’s progress in the Eastern Region.
According to him, the NDC has made significant gains in the region through coordinated efforts, and maintaining that momentum requires his full attention.
Speaking in an interview on Eyewitness News, he admitted that resigning from his government role was one of the toughest decisions he has had to make, given both its personal and professional implications.
“It was a very difficult decision, and one person who was affected most is my minister, Sam George. This is because he knows the kind of work we have been doing and systems we have put in place to ensure efficiency within government systems. I am sure he has not recovered from the decision I have taken,” he said.
Dr Oliver-Kevor noted that his departure from NITA would allow him to fully dedicate his time and energy to party activities, particularly as the NDC seeks to consolidate its gains in the Eastern Region.
He also dismissed suggestions that his resignation was unusual, pointing out that political practices have evolved over time.
“There is no issue with the position of having to resign from your appointed position if you want to go for party position. We used to have situations where we had people who were MPs and still held positions in the party. We have moved from certain regimes in the past to this one. Once the party has taken this new decision, I respect it,” he stated.
His resignation marks a significant transition from public office to party politics, as he positions himself to retain his leadership role within the NDC in the Eastern Region.
