Former Member of Parliament for the Subin Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has criticised former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta for remaining outside Ghana despite an ongoing state investigation against him.

Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV on January 12, 2026, Boakye Antwi expressed concern that Ofori-Atta’s absence is damaging the reputation of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and fueling perceptions of corruption among party members.

“Have you ever seen a political party leave government and its finance minister cannot be found? It has been one year since Kissi Agyebeng started mentioning Ken Ofori-Atta’s name. Do you know the damage that has caused the party? They have implanted in the minds of Ghanaians that the NPP are thieves,” he said.

Boakye Antwi emphasised that public funds belong to Ghanaians and that officials are merely custodians. “All the taxes we collect go into the Consolidated Fund, and those monies belong to Ghanaians. So, if you are accused by the state of financial malpractice, why are you running away? Come back and explain yourself,” he added.

Headline 2: Ken Ofori-Atta Arrested in US as Ghana Seeks Extradition Over SML Scandal

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has reportedly been arrested in the United States by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over immigration-related issues, as Ghana formally requests his extradition to face corruption charges linked to the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) scandal.

The charges, which include corruption and corruption-related offences, stem from allegations that Ofori-Atta was involved in financial irregularities during his tenure as Finance Minister.

Political commentators, including Okatakyei Afrifa-Mensah, have criticised Ofori-Atta’s continued absence from Ghana, claiming it has negatively affected the image of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). “Your inaction and absence have made the NPP unattractive,” Afrifa-Mensah stated.

The development comes amid heightened public scrutiny over accountability and the handling of public funds, with calls intensifying for Ofori-Atta to return to Ghana to face the law.
