The National Youth Authority (NYA) has strongly condemned recent incidents of student violence linked to inter-school activities, calling for discipline, self-control, and lawful conduct among young people across the country.
In a statement issued for immediate release, the Authority expressed concern over reported cases of assault during school competitions. According to the NYA, a student of Obrachire Senior High Technical School was hospitalized after allegedly being attacked during the District Schools Athletics Competition in Agona Swedru, leading to the arrest of three suspects.
In a separate incident, six students from Aggrey Memorial Senior High School were arrested in connection with the alleged assault of a final-year student of Adisadel College.
The NYA commended the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Education Service for their swift intervention and commitment to due process in addressing the incidents.
Describing the acts as unacceptable, the Authority stated that such behavior undermines the values of discipline, respect, and healthy competition that school activities are meant to promote. “Violence has no place in our schools or among our youth,” the statement emphasized.
The NYA further urged young people to uphold self-control and responsible citizenship in line with the National Youth Policy’s provisions on character development. It reaffirmed its commitment to promoting positive values and peaceful coexistence among Ghana’s youth.
The Authority also indicated it would collaborate with the National Peace Council to promote the Peace Ambassadors Initiative aimed at preventing similar occurrences in second-cycle institutions.
The statement was signed by Osman A. Ayariga, Chief Executive Officer (Ag.) of the National Youth Authority.
