President John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, describing them as a major setback to Africa’s long-standing pursuit of unity, integration, and shared prosperity.

The President’s remarks follow reports of violence targeting Ghanaians and other African nationals in South Africa, which have forced the evacuation of about 300 Ghanaian citizens back home.

Speaking during a town hall meeting in London on Sunday, May 31, Mahama expressed deep concern over the developments, warning that such incidents undermine efforts to strengthen cooperation among African countries and promote continental development.

“We’ve always pushed for African unity, and so it’s sad to see some of the things that are happening on the continent,” he said. “There’s no way that any African country can achieve the kind of progress that it needs without working with other countries. We cannot achieve it in isolation.”

He stressed that Africa’s progress depends on collaboration rather than division, urging countries across the continent to remain committed to the ideals of solidarity and mutual support.

Mahama further highlighted the importance of initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), noting that it was designed to promote the free movement of people, goods, and services across the continent.

“That is why we passed AfCFTA, so that our people can move freely among themselves,” he added.

The President called on African leaders and citizens alike to reject xenophobia and work towards strengthening ties that will advance economic growth and development.

Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana has intensified efforts to support citizens affected by the unrest, with hundreds already evacuated through a coordinated operation led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Pretoria.
