Six individuals have picked nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency ahead of the March 3, 2026 by-election.
The aspirants include the party’s constituency chairman, Mohammed Ramme; Hajia Amina Adam, wife of the late Member of Parliament; Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed; and Dr. Yakubu Azindow. The others are Najib Mohammed Sani and Mohammed Abdul Salam (Salam Daru).
Speaking on the Citi News Digest, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko Computer, described the contest as one expected to generate keen interest within the party.
“At the close of nominations today, six persons picked nomination forms to contest the upcoming primaries. The wife of the late MP was the last person to pick nominations today. It is going to be a very interesting contest. The filing will be on Tuesday, January 27. We are waiting to see how many of them will bring their forms,” he said.
Nominations officially closed on Friday, January 24, 2026, with the party confirming that all completed forms are to be submitted at the Regional Office on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of the Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, on January 4, 2026, after a short illness. Parliament subsequently declared the seat vacant, paving the way for the Electoral Commission (EC) to schedule a by-election in line with constitutional provisions.
The EC has since fixed Tuesday, March 3, 2026, for the by-election, while the NDC will hold its parliamentary primary on February 7, 2026, to select its candidate.
In a related development, the Supreme Court is expected to deliver its ruling on the Kpandai rerun case on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
