Businessman Ibrahim Mahama has fully funded a $15,000 life-saving brain surgery in India for 14-year-old Hadeya Mohammed.

Hadeya is a first-year student at Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) in Tamale.

The intervention followed an April 6 report by Shawana Yussif, Northern Bureau Chief of Channel One TV, which brought national attention to her condition.

Her illness had begun to significantly affect her hearing and disrupt her education.

Medical professionals recommended urgent surgery abroad, prompting appeals from her teachers and classmates, who mobilised support to help her.

Mr Mahama subsequently covered the full cost of the procedure, providing relief to the student and her family.

“The full payment has been made, and she can now travel to undergo the surgery in India. We wish her a speedy recovery,” Rafik Mahama, Special Aide to Mr Mahama, confirmed.

The intervention has been described as timely, with attention also drawn to the role of media reporting in mobilising support.
