The Government has pledged to engage key communications and technology institutions to explore ways of improving internet connectivity at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), as the University prepares to expand technology-based learning under the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP).

The commitment was announced by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George Esq., during the presentation of 200 laptops to UHAS on Friday, October 16, 2026.

The Minister said the Ministry would engage the National Communications Authority (NCA), the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) and telecommunications operators to explore opportunities for additional cell sites and fibre-optic infrastructure on campus.

Improved connectivity would support students’ participation in digital skills training and help create an enabling environment for technology-based education and innovation.

The laptops were provided under the Government’s flagship One Million Coders Programme, which seeks to equip Ghanaians with in-demand technology skills, improve employment opportunities, promote entrepreneurship and expand participation in the digital economy.

The devices feature Intel Core i5 processors, 16GB RAM, 512GB solid-state drive storage and Windows 11 operating systems. Fifty laptops have already been configured and deployed in preparation for training, while the University has identified a 160-seater facility to support programme delivery.

The Vice-Chancellor of UHAS, Prof. Lydia Aziato, welcomed the support and reaffirmed the University's commitment to the national digital development agenda. She said suitable spaces had been identified across the University’s schools to accommodate the equipment and encourage student participation.

The planned connectivity engagement, alongside the provision of computers and specialised training, could help strengthen the University's digital learning infrastructure and support the development of technology-enabled healthcare professionals.

The initiative reflects growing recognition of the role of reliable digital infrastructure and technology skills in modern healthcare education, research and service delivery.
