Renowned Ghanaian artist and cultural entrepreneur Ibrahim Mahama is reportedly receiving medical care at a private hospital following what he describes as a violent encounter with a police unit.

Mahama, founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA), Red Clay Studio, and Nkrumah Voli-ni in Tamale, alleges that the incident involved operatives linked to the office of the Inspector General of Police. The unit, he claims, is popularly known as the “Black Maria” special operations team.

Recounting the ordeal, Mahama said officers forcefully boarded the bus he was traveling in, demanded access to his mobile phone, and proceeded to erase its contents. He characterized the entire episode as an attack on his personal freedoms.

“From the beginning to the end, everything was an assault,” he said, describing the situation as a serious violation of his rights.

The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf Mboridiba, has strongly condemned the alleged incident. He emphasized that the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) would not condone such actions within the region.

According to the minister, the regional police command has no official record of a “Black Maria” team operating in the area. He assured the public that a full investigation is underway to uncover the facts and hold any responsible parties accountable.

“We cannot tolerate this kind of lawlessness in the region and anyone found culpable will be dealt with,” Mboridiba stated. He also highlighted Mahama’s diplomatic standing, stressing that any attack on him would be treated with utmost seriousness.

Authorities have since confirmed that an investigation has been initiated by the regional police command as concerns mount over the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
