The Government of Ghana, through its Embassy in the United States, has expressed profound disappointment following Lincoln University’s last-minute decision to withdraw the conferment of an honorary doctorate degree, honoris causa, on John Dramani Mahama.
According to the Embassy, the decision—communicated just hours before the President’s scheduled visit on Thursday, March 26—was reportedly influenced by concerns raised by a section of the University community regarding President Mahama’s perceived stance on Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, widely known as the anti-gay Bill currently before Parliament.
In a strongly worded statement, the Embassy indicated that these concerns were not brought up during earlier stages of engagement, despite extensive due diligence and vetting processes undertaken by both parties. Officials from the University and the Ghanaian mission had, as recently as last week, conducted a full walkthrough and finalised all logistical and programme arrangements for the visit.
“It is both surprising and regrettable that such concerns have surfaced at this late stage, particularly with the President already in the United States in anticipation of the visit,” the statement noted.
The Embassy further stressed that President Mahama accepted the invitation in good faith, highlighting the longstanding historical ties between Ghana and Lincoln University—an institution notably linked to Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah.
While acknowledging the University’s right to engage its internal stakeholders and uphold its institutional values, the Embassy raised concerns that the issues cited relate to ongoing legislative processes in Ghana. It emphasised that such matters are subject to democratic debate and do not represent the unilateral position of any individual.
The statement also reaffirmed President Mahama’s longstanding reputation for leadership rooted in democratic principles, respect for human rights, and inclusive dialogue on complex societal issues.
Describing the development as unfortunate, the Embassy noted that the concerns emerged at an advanced stage without prior engagement or opportunity for clarification.
Despite the setback, the Embassy reiterated its commitment to constructive dialogue and mutual respect, expressing optimism that the enduring relationship between Ghana and Lincoln University will help guide a balanced and amicable resolution.
