Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, has voiced confidence in the leadership of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa following recent xenophobic attacks and unrest targeting foreign nationals in some communities across South Africa.
The minister, reacting to an open letter issued by President Ramaphosa condemning the violence, described the South African leader’s remarks as encouraging and timely. In a Facebook post shared on May 11, Ablakwa said Ghana remains hopeful that the South African government will take decisive steps to restore peace and protect all affected persons.
According to him, Ghana believes in the leadership of President Ramaphosa and trusts that his administration will work to preserve the values of African unity and coexistence.
“This is reassuring, President Cyril Ramaphosa. We count on your leadership to resolve this,” the Foreign Affairs Minister stated.
Mr Ablakwa further emphasized the strong diplomatic and historical relationship between Ghana and South Africa, noting that both countries have maintained bonds rooted in solidarity, mutual respect and African brotherhood for many years.
He also reiterated his unwavering belief in the Pan-African vision championed by Kwame Nkrumah, stressing the need for African countries to remain united despite challenges confronting the continent.
“I unrepentantly share in Kwame Nkrumah’s dream — Africa Shall UNITE,” he added.
President Ramaphosa had earlier strongly condemned the attacks and protests directed at foreign nationals, insisting that criminality and violence cannot be justified under any circumstance.
The South African leader also clarified that the acts of violence do not represent the values of the South African people or the official position of the government.
He warned that authorities would not tolerate acts of vigilantism and lawlessness, regardless of who is involved, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to enforcing immigration and labour laws within the framework of human rights and the rule of law.
The recent developments have sparked concern among several African countries, with many calling for calm, tolerance and stronger efforts to promote unity across the continent.
