President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged Ghanaians working in formal sectors to actively participate in agriculture, noting that the profession offers viable opportunities for supplementary income and national growth.

Speaking at the 41st National Farmers’ Day event in Ho, the President challenged the perception that farming is reserved for people living in rural communities. He described this belief as outdated and urged the public to adopt a more inclusive view of the sector.

Mahama pointed out that even with demanding careers, professionals can manage farms effectively. “Agriculture isn’t only for the village folks,” he stated. “Teachers, civil servants, and other workers can maintain farms alongside their jobs, and the returns can significantly support their incomes.”

He highlighted the economic and national benefits of such participation, explaining that increased involvement from salaried workers would not only improve family finances but also help reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported food.

The President also promoted the adoption of modern farming practices—such as irrigation, mechanized tools, and improved seedlings—to help part-time farmers remain productive without having to be on their farms every day.

Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to creating a supportive environment for both full-time and part-time farmers, adding that a more diverse participation base is crucial to strengthening Ghana’s agricultural sector.
