The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Tuesday declared a state of emergency across the sub-region following a surge in coups and attempted military mutinies in recent months.

The announcement was made by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray at the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council, held at the ministerial level in Abuja. Touray warned that the recent political unrest reflects deepening instability that threatens the future of democratic governance in West Africa.

“The pattern of events we are witnessing underscores the urgent need to reflect on the future of our democracy and to strengthen the security of our community,” Touray said.

The declaration marks one of the most significant regional responses in recent years, coming as several member states confront political upheavals, contested transitions, and eroding civilian authority. ECOWAS officials say the emergency move will enable a coordinated security framework and rapid intervention mechanisms aimed at preventing further deterioration of political order.

The sub-region has experienced multiple unconstitutional changes of government since 2020, fueling concerns about democratic backsliding and weakening institutions. ECOWAS is expected to unveil additional measures in the coming weeks.
