Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the presidential flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the party’s nationwide primary held on Saturday, January 31.
The former Vice President won the contest convincingly, polling 110,643 votes, which accounted for 56.48 percent of the total valid ballots cast. His victory positions him to lead the NPP into the next general elections.
Kennedy Agyapong finished in second place with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 percent, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong secured third place after obtaining 36,303 votes, or 18.53 percent.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum placed fourth with 1,999 votes (1.02 percent), followed by Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, who garnered 402 votes, translating into 0.21 percent.
The primary attracted participation from more than 211,000 accredited delegates nationwide. Voting took place at 333 polling centres across all 275 constituencies, with party officials overseeing the process.
Security was visibly reinforced at voting centres, and party leadership closely monitored proceedings to ensure openness and credibility. Results from early collation pointed to a commanding lead for Dr. Bawumia, underscoring his strong appeal among delegates.
Observers and party executives described the exercise as largely peaceful, noting only minor incidents during voting and vote counting.
In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to party delegates for their confidence in his leadership. He pledged to lead a united and inclusive campaign ahead of the 2028 general elections.
He also appealed to supporters of the other aspirants to close ranks and work together toward securing victory for the NPP at the national level.
