Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed has won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency, paving the way for him to contest the upcoming by-election.
The primary, conducted on Saturday, February 7, 2026, followed the death of the late Ayawaso East MP, Mahama Naser Toure, and brought together five aspirants seeking the party’s nomination.
Official results from the two voting centres showed Baba Jamal leading with 431 votes, narrowly edging out Hajia Amina Adam, who garnered 399 votes. Mohammed Ramme received 88 votes, Dr. Yakubu Azindow obtained 45 votes, while Mohammed Najib Sani secured one vote.
The exercise was closely watched amid discussions over campaign conduct. During the voting process, Baba Jamal’s campaign distributed items including 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs to delegates. He later explained that the items were acts of goodwill and not intended to influence voting decisions.
In his victory remarks, Baba Jamal appealed for calm and cohesion within the party, stressing the need for collective effort to retain the seat for the NDC.
Scenes of celebration erupted in parts of the constituency as delegates and supporters marked the outcome, signaling the start of campaign activities toward the Ayawaso East by-election.
