Ghanaian actor Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, has been ordered to pay GH¢10,000 in costs by the Supreme Court following what the bench described as a display of disrespect during proceedings tied to his legal battle with actress Martha Ankomah.

The ruling came after LilWin filed an application seeking to halt ongoing proceedings in a defamation suit brought against him by Martha Ankomah. The application, which aimed to stay the case pending appeal, was ultimately struck out after it was withdrawn shortly before the scheduled hearing.

Despite filing a notice to discontinue the application, neither LilWin nor his legal representatives appeared before the apex court when the matter was called. The five-member panel, presided over by Justice Amadu Tanko, took a dim view of their absence, describing it as a lack of respect for the court.

Lawyers representing Martha Ankomah urged the court to impose costs, arguing that the conduct of the applicant had wasted the court’s time. The panel agreed and awarded GH¢10,000 in costs against LilWin.

The development marks another twist in the ongoing GH¢5 million defamation case filed by the actress in 2024. Martha Ankomah alleges that certain public comments made by LilWin damaged her reputation and portrayed her in a negative light, particularly regarding her stance on working with Kumawood actors.

LilWin’s legal team had earlier challenged the jurisdiction of the case being heard in Accra instead of Kumasi, but that argument was dismissed by both the High Court and the Court of Appeal. Subsequent attempts to halt proceedings were also unsuccessful, leading to the Supreme Court application.

Meanwhile, there have been intermittent efforts by both parties to resolve the matter out of court. Although initial discussions suggested a possible settlement, the agreement reportedly collapsed after LilWin declined to sign the proposed terms.

The case remains active at the High Court, where both sides have been given time to either finalize a settlement or proceed with full trial. The next hearing is expected to determine whether the long-running dispute will be resolved amicably or continue through the courts.

As the legal battle unfolds, the ruling by the Supreme Court adds further pressure on LilWin, whose actions in court have now drawn public judicial criticism.
