An Accra Circuit Court has remanded two men into custody over their alleged involvement in a high-value robbery at a jewellery shop in Westlands, near Haatso, where gold items worth GH¢2 million were stolen.
The accused, Musa Abdul Aziz Mamoud, also known as Justin Martin, a 34-year-old stock trader, and Donatus Kwame Donkor, a 37-year-old carpenter, have both pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and robbery. Mamoud is facing additional charges of causing unlawful damage and money laundering.
According to prosecutors, the robbery, which took place on 26 April 2025 at the Berma Jewellery Shop, was carefully planned. Mamoud allegedly disguised himself in a pullover, gloves, and a mask before arriving at the scene on a motorbike, while Donkor is said to have played a supporting role.
The prosecution told the court that Donkor engaged the shop’s security guard at the entrance, creating a diversion that allowed Mamoud to enter. Once inside, Mamoud allegedly overpowered the guard and sprayed pepper into his eyes before attacking a shop attendant in a similar manner, leaving both victims incapacitated.
Mamoud is then said to have collected gold chains, pendants, earrings, and bracelets valued at GH¢2 million, placing them into a bag before fleeing the scene on the motorbike, with Donkor reportedly acting as a lookout.
Investigations were launched after the complainant, a trader based in Dome, reported the incident to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Acting on intelligence, police arrested Mamoud on 24 March 2026 at his residence in Anyaa Market.
A search conducted at his home allegedly uncovered items believed to have been used in the robbery, including masks, a hammer, pepper spray, a toy gun, and a crash helmet. Police also retrieved assorted jewellery, a gold detector, and a weighing scale.
Donkor was later arrested on 26 March 2026 at his residence in Osu. Authorities also recovered the motorbike suspected to have been used during the robbery.
Prosecutors further indicated that Mamoud allegedly sold part of the stolen gold to an unidentified buyer and used some of the proceeds to purchase a Toyota FJ Cruiser before his arrest.
The court has ordered the prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Emmanuel Haligah, to file witness statements and disclosures ahead of the next hearing, scheduled for 13 April 2026, as investigations continue.
