Chef giving away 500 Christmas meals to people in need

A team of volunteers is making 500 meals for vulnerable people as part of a campaign to give back at Christmas.

Chef Caz Goddard, from Kewstoke, has been helping to feed her community in north Somerset during the festive period since 2020.

The caterer made 250 dinners in 2024 and hopes to double that number this year with the help of 15 volunteers, delivering meals and presents on 23 December.

Speaking to BBC Bristol Radio's John Darvall, she said: "If you're lonely, if there's a problem, please reach out to us. We want to help."

Ms Goddard, who owns a catering business, said her campaign started during the pandemic as she "did not want people to be on their own" over the holiday.

Working alone, she made 50 meals during the festive period in 2020.

"I was bored of seeing Christmas trees with hundreds of gifts in front of [them] and then walking down the street and seeing someone homeless.

"I got lost with Christmas as well - I think it was 'how much can I get my daughter' etc and the whole giving back had got lost.

"I wanted to change the way I look and support people at Christmas," she added.

Ms Goddard and her team will start making Yorkshire puddings this weekend and freeze them ready for the meals.

"We do this whole big thing - and then they get a goodies bag," she said.

The festival bundles will be offered to women escaping domestic violence and people in homeless shelters.

"Christmas really changed for me in the last five years," Ms Goddard said.

"Whether it's mental health, our finances go wrong, anything like that – we are all probably one step away from being homeless ourselves."
