West and Central Zone Junior Tennis Championship opens

Accra, Jan 19, GNA - The third edition of the West and Central Africa Zone Junior Tennis Championship opened at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club on Tuesday.

The tourney meant for tennis players within the ages of 14 and 16 from the two Zones would end on January 26. Jeff Abeasi, Chairman of the Ghana Tennis Association (GTA) told Championships scheduled for Morocco in May this year. He said the participation countries include Benin, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Congo DR, Gabon, Mauritania, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo who will be vying with hosts Ghana for tickets to the main championships.
He however added that Equatorial Guinea and Congo have withdrawn at the last hour.
The General Secretary of GTA, Ignatius Elletey explained that the top three from each category of the U-14 and U-16 (boys and girls) will qualify for the continental championship. The annual tournament which is sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) is part of activities towards the development of the sport on the continent.
Ghana is being represented by a 15-member team with MTN as the main sponsors of the event. Nigeria hosted the last two editions.
