Golden Rackets Get ?6m

GHANA’s tennis team the Golden Rackets, has received ?6million from the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Edward Osei Kwaku, for their splendid performance at the last ITF West and Central Africa Under-19 Tennis Circuit. Ghana won one gold and five silver medals at the tournament held in Cotonou, Republic of Benin between December 26, last year and January 6, this year. Salifu Mohammed won the only gold medal for the country in the boys singles and patnered Eric Atobaba to win silver in the boys doubles.

Ivy Aryeetey and Ishetu Kareem won silver in the girls doubles and collected silver medals in their individual events.Salifu Mohammed received ?2 million for his effort while the others and coach Samuel Lamptey had ?1million each.

In response, the Chairman of the Ghana Tennis Association, Mr Jeff Abeasi, thanked Mr Edward Osei Kwaku for the gesture which, he said, “will spur the players to greater heights”.

Present at the ceremony were the acting Chief Executive of the National Sports Council (NSC), Dr E. Owusu-Ansah, the Head of Public Relations of the NSC, Mr Charles Aryeh, Secretary General of the Ghana Tennis Association, Mr Charles Attah and Mr Peter Annan, member of the association.
