Dorothy Oboubi is Goil Cadet Table Tennis Champion

Accra, Oct. 21, GNA - Dorothy Oboubi of A.M.E Zion Girls Senior High School, Winneba in the Central Region emerged winner of the Ghana Oil Limited (GOIL) Homowo National Cadet Open Championships held at the D.G Hathiramani Sports Hall of the Ohene Gyan Sports Stadium at Accra at the week-end.

Oboubi's feat is the second in the series of the Ghana Table Tennis Association's (GTTA) National Open Championships. She defeated Eunice Quaye of Greater Accra Region 3 - 0. Before reaching the finals, Quaye defeated Fatima Obiri Yeboah also of Greater Accra Region 3 - 1, and chalked a similar margin of 3-1 over Gloria Asafo-Adjei of the Eastern Region. Asafo-Adjei took the second place with Fatima Obiri Yeboah taking up the third position.

In the Boys division, Isaac Amoako of Greater Accra Region clinched the ultimate after beating Isaac Davies from Cape Coast Jubilee School 3 - 2 in the finals.

Davies picked up the second position with a major upset against highly ranked Emmanuel Asante of Eastern Region with a 3-1 win and 3-0 victory over Oscar Forson of Ashanti Region. Forson of Ashanti Region placed third while Asante placed fourth. In the Boy's singles, Derek Abrefa of Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) crushed all opposition to capture the Boys singles title in the Juniors' (Under 18) category after he beat Mawutor Quarcoo (3-2). He also defeated Emmanuel Commey 3-1 and Felix Lartey 3-1. Emmanuel Commey settled for the second position with Mawutor Quarcoo placing third whilst Felix Lartey placed fourth. Navy's Bernice Borquaye dethroned Celia Baah Danso of Central Region by 3-2 and took away the first position and the top prize in female Juniors' category.

Celia Baah Danso consoled herself with the second position after she beat the two times champion, Akosua Ketu of the Central Region by (3-0) and added Cynthia Kwabi of Immigration also by a (3-0) victory. Akosua Ketu came third while Cynthia Kwabi settled for the fourth position.

Prince Ernest Oduro-Mensah, Chief Executive of the National Sports Council (NSC) in his closing remarks, commended Ghana Oil Limited (GOIL) for the sponsorship of the championship. He encouraged the players to keep up the good fight and advised them to be disciplined, respectful, peaceful and patriotic, particularly during the period of the up-coming elections.

The Chief Executive cautioned the players that the Council would not endorse the participation of any player in international competitions if any of them was found to be indisciplined. Sqd. Ldr (Rtd) Ebo Bartels, Chairman of GTTA advised the players to take their training seriously since the Association's focus now was on the development of the youth.

He was also full of praise for GOIL and the competition officials for a successful event.

The Association expressed its gratitude, especially GOIL, COB-A-Industries Limited, the Security Services and the Regional Sports Development Officers of the National Sports Council for sponsoring their players as well as the Ghanaian Media for ensuring a successful championship. 21 Oct. 08
