Abrefa wins Hathiramani Memorial Tennis

Accra, Nov. 18, GNA - Derek Abrefa of Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) beat Mohammed Ali of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) 3-0 in the finals to win the Third Annual D.G. Hathiramani Memorial Tennis Championship played at the Seven Great Princess Academy School Complex Hall at Dansoman in Accra on Saturday.

The game, which started on a fast note, saw Abrefa piling up pressure on his opponent with crafty services. It therefore came as no surprise when he dominated all the three sets with scores of 11-6, 11-8 and 11-6 to clinch victory to carry away the magnificent trophy.

Ali on the way to the finals edged out Solomon Akonnor of Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) and Oscar Forson of Winneba while champion Abrefa also defeated Asafo Agyei of Ghana Armed Forces and Eric Agyepong of Ghana Police Service. In the Ladies encounter, Afua Oforiwaah of CEPS made mince meat of Akosua Ketu of the Central Region with a three straight victory to win the trophy.

The one-day event was in memory of Mr D.G. Hathiramani, a table tennis enthusiast who died some years ago. Squadron Leader Ebo Bartels, Chairman of the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) advised the participants to avoid indiscipline and cheating, which he noted was gradually eating into Ghanaian sports. Dr Samuel Armah Quaye and Mr Emmanuel Okai, Executors of Hathiramani Estates, presented the prizes to the winners.
