A retired Banker of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) Limited, Mrs. Cecilia Adwoa Amankwah has been awarded the 'Best Mother of the Year 2017' by the St. Dominic Catholic Church at Taifa in Accra.

The award which is an initiative of the St. Dominic Parish Youth Council is to honour one of the women whose contribution to the growth of the Church cannot be overlooked and to encourage mothers to continue supporting the Church in diverse ways.

Speaking to www.ghanaweb.com on how the ultimate winner was selected among the tall list of nominees from the various women groups in the church, Chairman of the Youth Council, Mr. Raphael Anthony Quansah said, it was a difficult task selecting just one person as a winner because all nominees were great mothers.

However, Mr. Quansah said, the achievements of Auntie Cici as Mrs. Cecilia Amankwah is widely known among members of the Church, outshined those of the other nominees.

According to him, the council was convinced to crown her the best due to her commitment to serving God and humanity.

“If you look at her personality and her commitment to the course of the church; at every programme you can be sure to see Mrs. Amankwah there,” he said.

He added, “As a retired banker, she has served the church for more than 10 years and especially on the Church’s Finance Committee. She alone together with few others have organized a choir for morning masses which is not little an achievement.”

The mother of two who has become the mother of all, according to Mr. Quansah is very proactive in ensuring the church’s environment was cleared and cleaned to the extent that she sometimes weed the premises when it’s unkempt.

It has been revealed that the “St. Dominic Mother of the Year” does not only finds delight in helping the church grows spiritually but also believes in feeding the physical body of her children in the church by sponsoring youth programmes.

“Out of her own pocket she likes to feed the youth whenever we are embarking on any trip. She’s on the board of many societies serving them financially, emotionally and also motivating them. So as you can see, she deserved the award,” Mr. Quansah explained.

Mrs. Amankwah’s comment

Auntie Cici who was shocked to be named the Mother of the Year said she was touched by the gesture and could not have made it if not by God’s grace and will.

“I was emotionally touched and felt like crying because I wasn’t expecting this. It came as a surprise,” she said.

She has this to tell other mothers in the church and outside; “Anything you are doing make sure it is done well and the good Lord will reward you.”
