2 Islamic sects clash over Mosque in Akyem Tafo

Tension is mounting in Akyem Tafo in the Eastern Region as two Muslim sects fight over the use of a Mosque.

The Tijaniyya and Alhusunna sects have worshipped together in the Mosque for years, but a recent order from the regional Chief Imam Yusif Amudani and the Municipal Chief Executive Simon Peter Asirifi that the Mosque be handed over to the Tijaniyya sect has met some resistance from the Alhusunna group.

The Tijaaniyya have vowed to forcefully occupy the Mosque. Zongo Chief of the area Maswud Abdallah told Starr News the move conflicts with their practice over the years.

“Since the time of our forefathers, we all do everything together. After prayers, Tijaniyya man will go, will stand aside and recite all the sermons he wants to do after the prayers. But now, as they are saying, they want to separate it and do their own things there while that’s not what our forefathers left to us.

“So we want to put the town, the inhabitants in one group. When it’s time for you to do anything different from the prayers, you have no, we have no option,” he explained.

Chief Maswud warned that the peace the town is enjoying could be jeopardised if the directive is carried through because both sects have their support groups who could be up to no good.

“We are telling our people to stay calm because we don’t want any problem,” the Chief said.
