Unnecessary criticisms drained me – Former Church of Pentecost Chair

The immediate past Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah has expressed worry over what he says is unnecessary criticisms against leaders of the church.

According to him, during his tenure, such criticisms drained all his energy and he, at a point in time felt he needed a break from the arduous task of leading the church.

Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah delivering a sermon during the induction ceremony of his successor and new Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Kwabena Nyamekye cautioned that the new Chairman should not be subjected to same treatment as he may not be able to withstand it.

“I really feel that I’m tired and I need to rest so that I wanted to see this day, because along the line I saw the whole thing as a great burden pulling me which I needed the grace of God to continue and I don’t want you to do that to the new Chairman.”

On his part during his speech, Apostle Eric Kwabena Nyamekye questioned why seventy per cent of Ghanaians are Christians but corruption is still pervasive and endemic.

“In spite of the presence of these churches Ghanaian Christians have not yet impacted our society adequately in a way that eliminates endemic corruption to reflect the huge Christian presence in our country.”

In May 2018, the Church of Pentecost (COP) elected Apostle Eric Nyamekye, (Koforidua Area Head) as the new chairman to lead the Church for the next five years.

He replaces Apostle Prof. Opoku who served as the chairman for ten (10) years and retires in August.

Apostle Nyamekye is the 6th National Chairman of the Church.

Out of 151 votes from the Electoral College, only 4 people opposed. 147 people voted overwhelmingly in his favour. At the General Council, Apostle Nyamekye amassed total votes of 994 out of 1009 which represents 98.5% of the total vote.
