The hypocrisy of outgoing presby moderator

We, Concerned Presbyterian Youth made up of aggrieved youth in the Presbyterian Church of Ghana by this statement seek not to question the spirituality of our outgoing Moderator, Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey but question the hypocrisy he has exhibited as being incorruptible, a perfectionist and a democrat. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) met at its 10th General Assembly Meeting in Takoradi from August 6 -12, 2010 and elected Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey to lead the church for the next six years ending November 2016.

Never did the General Assembly know it shot itself. The Church, a major contributor to education, governance and economic development under the leadership of Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey is seen more as a wing of the major opposition party. The chief spokesperson of the Church has always taken a biased position and has involved the church in unnecessary debates.

It is against this backdrop that the Concerned Presbyterian Youth seeks to find answers from the General Assembly Council and the Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey, a man who questions the leadership skills of others how he has managed the PCG.

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF GHANA AND POLITICS

Before and after independence, the PCG has been a major contributor to national development and the 4th Republic has benefited tremendously from her contributions until Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey took over. For the first time the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana was engaged in name calling and unnecessary debates. Forcing the church to issue defense in his favour at all times rather than contributing to national growth like we have done under past Moderators.

BRIBE

The Moderator recently revealed that he rejected a bribe of $100,000, a 4x4 car and a house at Trassaco Valleys. But we the Concerned Presbyterian Youth expected Rt. Rev. Prof. Martey not to have made a vague statement. We expect him to name and shame his alleged bribe givers. Under our laws, he who gives or accepts bribe are all wronged and rejecting a bribe as huge as he did shouldn't have gone unreported to the appropriate authorities by someone who tags himself as an incorruptible, principled, disciplinarian and a perfectionist. He should do better by mentioning names and report them to the police for further investigation.

Recently, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the General Assembly issued a statement narrating that the Moderator informed them of the so called bride he declined. The question is; did he inform him the PRO or the General Assembly Council? Was the statement the PRO issued the official position of the Church? Is the PRO the person who sign official statement on decisions the General Assembly Council take or the Clerk of the General Assembly?

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF GHANA AND PREBYTERIAN CHURCH OF UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA)

According to our source at the General Assembly office, the Moderator who took a strong position against the Presbyterian Church of USA for allegedly accepting gay marriage has not officially written to the PC-USA to terminate our relationship.

Our source went on to say that the PCG continue to receive a yearly contribution of $100,000 from the PC-USA on behalf of Akrofi Christeller Institute and four Presbyteries. The source further revealed that the official car of the Moderator was donated by the PC-USA and one of Rt. Rev. Prof. Martey son is on scholarship pursuing PhD in Civil Engineering at University of Delaware where a course in transgender is compulsory for all students who pass through the university. The state of Delaware accepted gay marriage in 2011.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING AND OTHER INVESTMENTS

The Concerned Presbyterian Youth is in shock and disbelief and it will surprise the Presbyterians whose emotions have been taken for granted by Rt. Rev. Prof. Martey in his dealing that under the leadership of Rt. Rev. Prof. Martey the PCG has leased her huge former General Assembly building at Accra Central to a leading Savings and Loans company owned by a popular Ghanaian for 25 years at $9 million. When due processes was not followed and the church could have generated almost three times that amount if proper advise was sort from professionals in the church.

The questions all Presbyterians in Ghana MUST seek answers to are:

i. Why the General Assembly leased our office building for $9 million dollars and went for a loan close to $27 Million dollars to use part to finish an almost completed office building from a leading financial institution in the country.
ii. Why was the contract of completing the new office building not given to a Presbyterian when Rt. Rev. Prof. Martey has questioned the Government of Ghana for giving contracts to foreigners?
iii. What is the state of Presby Book Depot, Salem Water, Trinity Insurance, Christian Messenger, and Presbyterian Press?
iv. Is the General Assembly office paying electricity bills valued close GHC30,000.00 every month?
v. What is the relationship between the outgoing Moderator and Rev. Dr. Samuel Ayete-Nyampong, Clerk of General Assembly?
vi. What is the state of the 25 acres of land bought by Very Rev. A.A. Beeko for the construction of an office complex for the PCG like that of the Pentecost Church.
vii.Is it true that a Rev. Minister who serve the church goes home with less than GHC2,000 as retirement package?
THAT THEY ALL MAY BE ONE

The Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey has failed to live up to the motto of the church; "THAT THEY ALL MAY BE ONE". Today two senior officials; Very Rev. Yaw Frimpong-Manso (Frmr. Moderator) and Dr. Emmanuel Akyeampong (Frmr. PRO) have all left the church due to bad leadership. Our motto which states that in all things we should be together as one family was not lived up to by the senior official of the church.

CONCLUSION

On this note, we wish to call on Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey to go on leave and urge the General Assembly Council to respond to the questions we have asked in two weeks or we will organise and demonstrate against the leadership of the Church. And also call on soon to be inducted Rt. Rev. Prof. Cephas Omenyo to institute a commission of enquiry to investigate the church's activities under Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey.
