Thousands of Muslims on Saturday, September 20, 2025, converged at the Fadama Astro-Turf in Accra to celebrate Maulid, the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The annual national event brought together Muslim scholars from Ghana and other countries, religious leaders, dignitaries, political parties' representatives and families who gathered to reaffirm their commitment to Islamic traditions and values.

The celebration featured praises to the Holy Prophet, recitations, sermons on his life and teachings.

Scholars and clerics highlighted the significance of Prophet Muhammad’s example as a model of peace, humility, compassion, and justice.

This year’s commemoration was held under the theme: “Compassion and Justice: Pillars of National Development and Global Order.”

Participants were urged to emulate the Prophet’s qualities to foster unity, harmony, and peaceful coexistence within society.

Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Haruna Iddrisu emphasised the importance of compassion and justice in addressing national challenges.

He linked the theme of the celebration to the government’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining (galamsey), stressing that compassion for the environment must guide national development.

“If we had compassion for the environment and ensured quality drinking water, we would not pollute it, because denying society access to clean water and fresh air is unjust,” he said.

He called on chiefs, traditional rulers, academia, researchers, and the youth to continue supporting the government’s fight against galamsey.

Iddrisu also conveyed the President’s gratitude for the continuous prayers of the Muslim community, acknowledging the economic difficulties inherited by the current administration.

He assured that steps were being taken to restore stability, create jobs, and improve living conditions in 2026, including recruiting more teachers and Arabic instructors to expand access to education.

President Mahama, through his representative, further pledged scholarships to support Muslim students, particularly those pursuing Arabic studies, to help strengthen Islamic education in Ghana.
