BA United Hold Hearts

A determined B.A. United side living to their pre-match prediction not to succumb to visiting Accra Hearts of Oak on Sunday held the champion club to a pulsating goalless drawn game at the Coronation Park in Sunyani.

After bowing 0-4 to Liberty Professionals last week in Accra the rejuvenated Sunyani boys matched the Phobians boot for boot and nearly caused an upset but for erratic shooting in front of goal.

The match, one of the top-liners of the week's Kinapharma-sponsored league encounters however saw both sides throwing away goal-begging chances.

While the Phobian boys needed a victory badly to be able to catch up with their arch rivals, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, the league leaders, United were also determined to regain the confidence of their teeming supporters after their mauling by Liberty Professionals.

The tension surrounding the match was so high that even when the match had not started, at about 1430 pm supporters of the two sides engaged in missile throwing exercise at each other, forcing the Phobian supporters at the Methodist Church end of the Park to vacate their seats to take shelter.

It took policemen on duty about 10 minutes to restore order to enable the Hearts supporters to return to their seats. Another incident prior to the commencement of the match was when the match officials detected that there were some uninvited officials of the two teams who had forced themselves into the arena.

The referee John Ati Kesse of Koforidua and his lieutenants as well as the match commissioner stuck to their guns that not until such officials were sacked from the arena the match could not be started. This caused a delay in the commencement of the match, which was finally begun at 1530 pm instead of 1500 hours after sanity prevailed with the intervention of Mr Num Dwomoh, Chairman of Brong-Ahafo Regional Football Association (RFA) and Mr. Kwabena Munufie of the Regional Sports Council and Secretary of the RFA.

B.A United started the match in a whirlwind fashion winning a first corner under five seconds but wasted it.

They maintained the pressure probing the vital area of Hearts for an early goal but wasted all the chances that came their way. Hearts came into the picture but like their opponents also could not find the net due to erratic shooting.

United who were also playing conscious of their 1-2 first round defeat by Hearts of Oak in Accra did everything possible to avenge defeat and forced Hearts to play a defensive game in most part of the first half.

In the 13th minute United's Osman Sakora and Prince Poku combined effectively up front but their skilful move was poorly finished off by Kwasi Boateng whose shot went over the bar.

Let off the hook the attacking force of Hearts made up of Lawrence Adjei, Adjah Tetteh, Ablade Morgan, Nasiru Ghani and Don Bortey redoubled their efforts and in the 16th minute Eric Nyarko's bullet shot from 40 yards went over the bar.

B.A. United also immediately wasted another chance through Osman Sakora in the 18th minute.

Referee Kesse nearly lost control of the match as the two sides started to play it hard and this made Godfred Ansah of United seeing the first yellow card in the 20th minute while his colleague, Sakora suffered the same fate in the 29th minute for rough play. Proceedings continued to remain a ding-dong affair till the end of the first half.

United, bent on chalking victory resumed the second half with renewed vigour forcing the Hearts defence to reel but lack of marksmanship deprived them of a goal.

Kwasi Boateng of United joined the yellow card grabbers in the 56th minute for rough play.

From thence it was all Hearts throughout and they nearly opened the scoring in the 61st minute but goalkeeper Ahmed Mohideen managed to tipped Lawrence Adjei's long shot to safety.

Both sides made replacements but neither could find the net till the end of the match.

Kotoko Beat Olympics In Accra

In Accra, Kumasi Asante Kotoko called off the bluff of Accra Great Olympics when they defeated them by a lone goal in their match played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Kotoko who kicked off with the usual deafening roar by their supporters initially took the game to the home team but their brief dominance yielded nothing as Olympics proved unyielding.

Olympics playing under the direction of their former player, Abdul Aziz after the sacking of Coach E K Afranie, last Friday quickly reorganized and played some delectable football in the midfield where Francis Mantey operated effectively.

The Wonder Boys first opening came in the 12th minute when Iddrisu Sumaila's long-range effort flashed past the goal post even though George Owu in the post for Kotoko had it covered.

The home team again nearly went ahead a minute later when Roger Odammteng's header from a corner kick beat everybody except Edmund Owusu-Ansah who cleared the ball off the goal line.

Kotoko's reply was almost immediate as in the 15th minute Nana Arhin Duah found himself unmarked but the striker could not maintain his cool and volleyed the ball over the goal post.

The game then was reduced to a midfield tussle with occasional breaks at both ends, which yielded nothing except anxious moments for supporters of both clubs as their strikers failed to convert chances that came their way.

With the first half drawing to a close, a momentary lapse in concentration by Olympics Osei Bonsu allowed Yusif Chipsah to rob him of the ball and set up Steven Oduro on the run. Oduro in term set up Arhin Duah to fire in what turned out to be the winner in the 45th minute. The second half started with Olympics controlling affairs and pushing forward for the equaliser but they came up against a strong defensive back line of Kotoko who thwarted all their attempts.

The Fabulous boys then took control of the game and in the 50th minute had a great opportunity to double the scores when Michael Asante found himself unmarked in the Olympics box but he fired in a low drive which was pushed to touch by John Adjetey in post for Olympics.

Olympics resistance whittle down with time as Kotoko assumed control of the midfield after the inclusion of Michael Osei for Frank Osei who was not that effective on the day.

With Kotoko in the driving seat, they introduced out-of-form Charles Taylor into the game in the 70th minute and even though he succeeded in creating some anxious moments for defenders of Olympics with his trickery ball control, Kotoko could not increase the tally.

Mine Stars Thrash Lions

Cape Coast, Nov. 2, GNA - Relegated hunted Mines Stars played a purposeful game to beat Hearts of Lions 3-0 in their Kinapharma Premier league match at Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Sunday.

In a rather dull match, in which both teams played below standard, Mines Stars made victory certain as early as by the 28th minute when they bagged in three goals before half time.

And the man who was responsible for this victory was centre forward Eric Mbroh who scored two goals for his side.

Kicking off under the instruction of Kumasi based referee Joe Debrah, Mine Stars got the opener through a sports kick taken by inside left Abdul Samad in the eighth minute.

Inspired by the lead, Mine Stars continued to pile pressure of Lions and in the process Erich Mbroh increased the tally to 2-0 in the 12th minute.

In the 26th minute, the plight of Hearts of Lions was worsened when their centre forward Prince Osei was red-carded for elbowing an opponent.

With their number reduced to 10, Mine Stars capitalised on it to increase the tally to 3-0 in the 28th minute. The second half produced no goals.

Liberty hold Faisal to a 1-1 draw

Kumasi, Nov 2, - GNA- Dansoman Liberty Professionals drew 1-1 with King Faisal in their match played at the Kumasi Sports Stadium. Liberty scored first in the 23rd minute through Asamoah Gyan who connected home a cross from George Yamoah after Faisal had squandered three scoring chances in the sixth, 13th and 15th minutes.

The visitors nearly increased the tally in the 35th minute but Issifu Ansah's shot sailed over the bar.

Faisal, with their pride at stake tried to equalise and nearly had a goal in the 41st minute but goalkeeper Kotri Blankson saved Eric Gawu's close range shot.

Faisal came in strongly on resumption but their strikers could not put their acts together and allowed the defence of Liberty to keep them at bay.

The homers brought on Ishaq Debrah for Joe Agyemang in the 60th minute, while Liberty also substituted Nii Larbi Darko for Felix Baffoe in the 63rd minute, but it was still Faisal who continued to dominate.

In the 77th minute, George Yamoah of Liberty was brought down just on the edge of the penalty box but Issifu Ansah's shot went over the bar.

Striker Kwadwo Poku, however, atoned for his earlier misses when he equalised for Faisal with a spectacular scissor kick, which caught goalkeeper Blankson stranded in the 79th minute. Poku struck from a precise pass from Kwabena Boateng.

Godwin Ablordey gave way to Ben Wilson in the 84th minute as Faisal piled pressure in a bid to increase the tally. Liberty also put up a last minute onslaught but missed two chances in the 88th and 90th minutes.
