Kotoko Storm Ahead

League leaders Kumasi Asante Kotoko on Sunday consolidated their pole position with a 3-1 thrashing of B.A. United in their match at the Coronation Park in Sunyani.

Half time score was 2-1.

The match was four minutes old when slippery Frank Osei unleashed a 40-yearder of a shot to beat United goalkeeper Mohideen Ahmed for the first goal amidst thunderous cheers form the capacity crowd at the Park The game was one between a strong and slippery attacking armada of the Kum Apem trio of Osei, Shilla Alhassan and Moses Tetteh and a porous and shaky United defence who caved in on the three occasions.

United responded in bursts to the shrill signal of Referee Roger Osabu of Tamale for the commencement of the game and nearly got the opener under the first minute but striker Osman Sakora with only goalkeeper Louis Quainoo to beat fumbled, squandering the golden chance.

The first minute of the game also saw Richard Amankwah of United attracting the yellow card for intentionally handling the ball. Then came the fourth minute and much against the trend of play Kotoko took lead Osei.

After this goal Kotoko did not look back and nearly got the second goal in the 10th minute through enterprising Osei again but also with only goalkeeper Ahmed to beat, he fumbled and the goalkeeper cheekily grabbed the ball.

In the 19th minute Frank Adjei of United failed to capitalize on a defensive blunder by Kotoko's Godfred Yeboah but his colleague Osman Sakora leveled up for his side in the 23rd minute.

With the score at even both sides redoubled their efforts but it was Kotoko increased the tally in the 28th minute through once again Osei whose strike hit the net but the referee ruled it offside. Undeterred the attacking machinery of the red-shirted boys pressed harder and got another goal in the 39th minute through Osei, who had a good afternoon, after he was set up by Shilla Alhassan.

In the 44th minute Sakora messed up with another goal scoring chance.

On resumption United brought in Prince Adu-Poku for Justice Opoku but the former could not justify his inclusion, as all his moves were unproductive.

United got another yellow card through Kwadwo Owusu in the 58th minute.

Kotoko replaced Moses Tetteh with Yusif Chibsah in the 65th minute while Charles Taylor also came in for Shilla Alhassan in the 69th minute.

Taylor announced his presence in his first minute of play with a beautiful goal, which goalkeeper Mohideen Ahmed looked on helplessly as the ball danced in the net.

Kotoko then brought on Joe Okyere to take over from Stephen Oduro in the dying minutes of the game but neither side could score again till the final whistle.

Faisal Beat Bofoakwa Kumasi-Based King Faisal beat Bofoakwa Tano 2-0 in their Kinapharma Premier league played at the Kumasi sports stadium. Bofoakwa brought in Emmanuel Nkrumah quickly to strengthen their attack in the 32nd minute and succeeded in pulling a goal back in the 37th minute but it was ruled offside.

Bofoakwa came in strongly in the second half and scored in the 86th minute but the referee again ruled it offside.

The visitors continue to pile pressure on the homesters but could not find the net.

Okwawu 1 Mines Atars 1

Okwawu United scored a last gap equaliser, to share the points with their guests, Prestea Mine Stars with a 1-1 result in their match played at the Mpraeso Brightom Park.

The Miners went ahead on 80 minutes through Prince Yeboah who punished Okwawu's poor defending with a fine shot that left goalkeeper Fatau Dauda stranded.

Okwawu dominated the exchanges but their attackers messed up the numerous chances they created as Ernest Boateng and Osei Bonsu froze persistently in their opponents' penalty area. Mine Stars goalkeeper Patrick Antwi offered the home side a chance to take the lead on 20 minutes when he fouled Boateng in the box for a penalty.

Bonsu, however, struck the ball over the bar to send the match into recess with no goals.

Eric Mensah replaced Ernest Boateng and Elvis Opoku came on for Paul Amponsah, but the catalogue of misses continued as the Okwawu attackers appeared lethargic and Antwi pulled some fantastic saves to keep the home fans on urge.

When Mines Stars scored, Okwawu redoubled their efforts and had another penalty kick awarded them with three minutes remaining. Goalkeeper Antwi punched Elvis Opoku's shot back into play but Eric Mensah tapped the rebound in to give the hosts a face saving 1-1 draw.

In Koforidua, visiting Brekum Arsenals held Koforidua based Stay Cool Professionals F/C to a goalless draw in their match played at Koforidua.

Arsenals who displayed good team work and good football on several occasions managed to go through the defence of Stay Cool but Luggard Tetteh in the post of Stay Cool did all he could to deny them the needed goals.

The brightest chance of Arsenals came in the 14th minute when their centre forward, Seth Antwi-Gyan slipped through the defence of Stay Cool and delivered a shot but the ball fisted out of the post by Tetteh .

The ball came back to Antwi-Gyan who fired again at goal but Tetteh who was almost on the ground managed to lift himself up from the ground to fist the ball out of the post.

Again in the 63rd minute, a header by Antwi-Gyan in the goal area of Stay Cool beat Tetteh but hit the cross bar and bounced back into play.

In the 71st minute, inside left of Arsenals, Eric Adu-Poku had a pass right in front of the post of Stay Cool during a goal-mouth melee and blustered a point blank shot but the ball was once again fisted out of the post by Tetteh who did well in the post of Stay Cool. Stay Cool who were able to contain the onslaught of Arsenals on several occasion were able to push the ball into the half of the Brekum boys but often found it difficult to break through the defence of Arsenals.

It was only in the 86th minute that they managed to tear open the defence of Arsenals but a shot from the foot of substitute Wadada Abdulai, beat Issac Zoogah but the ball missed the upright by inches and went over the line for a goal kick.

Rains Stop Hearts-Goldfield

The titanic 27th week Premier League match between Obuasi Goldfields and Accra Hearts of Oak came to an abrupt end when the heavy rains forced Referee H. Seidu Bomson of Wa to stop the match at the 70th minute.

Hearts were leading by two goals to nothing through second half goals scored by Don Bortey in the 47th and 51st minutes.

The crowds gave in to the rains after the miners had effected their first corner-kick in the 55th minute and the excessive rains made ball control difficult as the field virtually became waterlogged.

Goldfields had played a good game in the first half but found the impenetrable defence of the visitors hard to break..

Hearts who introduced robust play in the early part of the game which made Louis Agyeman and Emmanuel and Emmanuel Osei to attract yellow cards in the 2nd and 5th minutes nearly drew the first blood but Lawrence Adjei in a good position to score shot into the waiting hands of goalkeeper Abukari Kankani.

The miners brightest opportunity fell on goal-king contender Shaibu Yakubu but on one-to-one basis with Sammy Adjei he fumbled, much to the relief of the visitors.

Hearts wasted two corner-kicks in the 32nd and 35 minutes before Dan Quaye earned a yellow card in the 37th minute for dissent.

The visitors improved their game on resumption of the second half and succeeded in scoring two quick goals from the boot of Don Bortey till the rains came.

Hearts officials led by the Chief Executive Tommy Okine expressed dissatisfaction about the referee's decision.

Olympics annihilate Lions 3-0

Accra, Nov. 9, GNA - Wonder Club, Great Olympics, applied the breaks on their string of poor results by annihilating Kpando Hearts of Lions 3-0 in their Kinapharman Premier league at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, characterised by a comedy of errors from both teams. The results moved Oly a step up on the 16-club standings on 31 points while Lions, slump two positions down from their previously held seventh position on 32 points.

Oly, who sacked their head coach Emmanuel Kwesi Afranie days before their crunched match against Kotoko opened fire in the first minute but Roger Odamtten shot feebly into the hand of agile goalkeeper Maxwell Arthur who stood between Olympics and a cricket score line. Lions who played without most of their key players including Adamu Mohammed of Ghana Olympics soccer team fame, allowed Oly to strike in the 21st-minute when Amui Quaye raced with the ball after a one-two with teammate Roger and delivered a low grounder for the opener. Oly fought hard to completely annihilate the Kpando lads, which materialised in the last quarter of the game.

Andrew Pomaye netted twice in the 70th and 82dn minutes, the first from a thunderbolt, and the second, an easy connection from a lob. But the Lions were disallowed what seemed to be a good goal in the 40th minute when Eric Yaovi Atikpe powered home a beautiful header.

Two-goal hero Pomeye was not left out in the afternoon of errors as he wasted a 54th-minute penalty but managed to bounce back to score two goals.
