Olympics bring smiles to supporters

Accra, June 15, GNA - Struggling Accra Great Olympics gave hope to their battle against relegation with a lone goal victory over Zaytuna FC in their Week 25 Onetouch Premier League clash at the El-Wak Stadium, Accra on Sunday.

Substitute Paa Joe Kumah's 66th minute strike ensured the second victory for the Wonder Club in the league after their only victory was recorded in the first round at the expense of Kessben FC in their Week 17 clash.

After a barren first half which saw Olympics lanky striker Sherif Mohamed making a mess of the brightest chance of the opening in the 37th minute; both sides resumed the second half on a high note. It was however the introduction of Kumah and Labaran Deen for Tanko Ibrahim and Frank Nyarko respectively of Olympics that made the difference as the changes resulted in frequent invasions into the Zaytuna half.

Olympics, whose quest seemed to have been aided by five minutes prayer upon resumption, kept the Zaytuna defence boiling with raids led by the two substitutes.

On one of such raids in the 66th minute, Sherif outwitted two players of Zaytuna before crossing perfectly to Kumah to slam home with Zaytuna's goalie Tetteh Lugard completely beaten. With defeat staring at them, Zaytuna's coach Fadl Oumar brought on Gideon Baah for Emmanuel Eyison, but the former was more of a passenger throughout the proceedings.

As the clock ticked by, the Olympics players resorted to time wasting, which saw substitute Michael Annan being cautioned by referee Oduro Okyere in the 85th minute. The remaining five minutes was played entirely in the Olympics area but the defensive pair of Sumaila Iddrisu and Samuel Laryea remained resolute to ensure that the Wonder Club clinched their first away win of the season.

Moments after referee Okyere had brought the game to an end, tears rolled down the cheeks of some fans of Olympics, while others went on jubilation with ecstasy. Despite the win, Olympics remain at the depth of the 16-club league.
