Ashgold Lift SWAG Cup

Ashanti Gold SC atoned for their losses to Hearts of Oak in the recent Top 4 competition when they beat the Phobians on penalties to lift the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) trophy.

Indeed, it was a sweet victory for the Aboakese lads who until yesterday’s win had also beaten a much weaker Hearts side 3-1 in the Otumfuo invitational tournament at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Ashgold ran away with a 3-2 penalty shoot-out win after the 90 minutes had ended in a deadlock.

Former national goalkeeper Sammy Adjei’s agility kept Hearts in the lead in the penalty shootout until Osei Pele missed his penalty, allowing skipper Daniel Asamoah to score the winning goal, while Wilson Andoh’s kick was saved by Ashgold’s goalkeeper Isaac Akon.

In a match that was characterized by some questionable refereeing decisions, Ashgold dictated the pace and should have been awarded a penalty in the first half but referee I.K Gyasi ignored a dangerous tackle by a Hearts defender on Frederick Quayson.

Both sides employed a tactically disciplined approach in a game that served as a preparatory match for both sides for the league which starts next week.
