Arsenal earn maiden away victory at Liberty's expense

Accra, Dec. 17, GNA - Berekum Arsenal grabbed their first away win of the soccer season when they came from behind to beat Liberty Professionals 2-1 in an outstanding week nine clash on Thursday at the Carl Reindorf Park, Dansoman, Accra. The result, the second successive loss for the Dansoman lads since Black Satellites coach Sellas Tetteh assumed the technical reigns, also shattered their ambitions of closing up on leaders Kessben FC.

The clash which was rescheduled due to the Liberty's involvement in the just ended West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Club Championship was watched by a countable crowd.

It was Liberty who took the lead on the stroke of half time through Isaac Donkor, when he headed home from Nouhoum Moutawakilou's cross from the right flank. The goal was the brightest spot of the first half characterized by a scrappy output from both sides.

Arsenal, traditional poor travellers, resumed the second half strongly and their quest for the equalizer yielded dividends on 71 minutes when substitute Ernest Obeng slotted home from close range. Obeng, who had replaced Samuel Owusu two minutes earlier, fired home by capitalizing on a lapse by the Liberty rear which revolved around David Kabu, Daniel Addo, Daniel Gyamfi and Richard Kissi.

Two minutes on, fellow substitute Sadiq Abubakar shot the visitors into the lead by slotting home after Liberty goalie Daniel Agyei had spilled a seemingly harmless effort onto his path.

The visitors appeared purposeful on the attack and were unlucky not to have increased their goal tally seven minutes from time as Shaibu Adams thunderbolt of a shot kissed the cross bar with keeper Agyei left sprawling. As the clock ticked on, Liberty kept the defence of Arsenal boiling with consistent raids but the latter defended gallantly to cruise to their maiden away victory of the Nine-week old season.
