Hockey To Light Up Afahye Festival

Hockey Clubs within the Country will storm the Central Region this weekend to climax the celebrations of the Afahye festival of the chiefs and people of the Oguaa Traditional area. The teams will participate in the 14th edition annual Oguaa Fetu Afahye hockey tournament slated for Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the University of Cape Coast Hockey Pitch. Vicandy Company has donated two trophies for the tournament.

According to Mr. Haruna Issah, programme organizer of the tournament, the event will be preceded by One Day Hockey Clinic for participants drawn from first cycle and second cycle schools and also the University of Cape Coast on Friday 5th September 2008. The Clinic will be facilitated by Richard Abaidoo, a national coach.

The tournament this year promises to be exciting and competitive, with an increase in number of participating clubs from 8 to 20 for both Men and Women category. Clubs featuring include host Cape Coast Hockey Club from the Central Region, Defending Champion in the Men Division CEPS, Golden Sticks, Multistix, Veterans, NDK Financiers, Citizens, Police, Trustees of SSNIT and Exchequers of Bank of Ghana all from the Greater Accra Region, Kumasi Hockey Club from the Ashanti Region, Takoradi Hockey Club from the Western Region and Eastern Regional Hockey Club. The Women Division will also feature Defending Champions Extinguishers of Fire Service, CEPS, University of Cape Coast, Police, Kumasi Ladies and Eastern Region Ladies.

This year’s occasion will also have on its agenda the inauguration of the Central Regional Hockey Association by the National Association, on Saturday 6th September 2008.
