Ghana is ready to host ACCC - Akpokavie

Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Hockey Association (GHA), has said Ghana is ready to host the rest of Africa for the upcoming Africa Cup for Club Championship (ACCC).

The tournament, which would run from 20th-28th January, 2018 at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch would have 12 clubs from Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt and Kenya for both male and female categories.

Mr Akpokavie in an interview with GNA Sports noted that Ghana upon four successful hosting of the tournament is well prepared for the event and urged Ghanaians to help make the 30th edition a success.

“This competition is the 30th edition and Ghana having hosted for the fourth successful time is ready to host the rest of the continent.

“Everything is well in place for the start of the tournament and I am urging all Ghanaians to help make this a success, we all have a role to play and to sell Ghana to the hockey loving fans across Africa and the world,” he stated.

Mr. Robert Sarfo Mensah, Director-General of National Sports Authority (NSA) at a press conference, said it was an honour for Ghana to host such a tournament again.

“I am very happy Ghana has been given the chance to host this tournament again, it is an opportunity for our hockey players to prepare for bigger events in future especially the female National team that has qualified for the commonwealth games in Gold Coast Australia”.

According to Mr. Sarfo Mensah, the NSA is every ready to give all its support to ensure a successful tournament.

The teams to battle it out in the men’s category are GRA Hockey Team of Ghana Revenue Authority, Trustees Hockey Team of SSNIT both from Ghana, with Eastern Company Club, who are the defending champions and ElSharkia Club both from Egypt, with Nigerian clubs Niger Flickers Hockey Club and Police Machine Hockey Club.

The Women’s category have two clubs from Ghana GRA Hockey Team of Ghana Revenue Authority and Police Hockey Club, with Telkom Hockey Club as defending champions from Kenya and Strathmore Hockey Club also from Kenya, as KADA Queens Hockey Club and Yobe Desert Queens Hockey Club from Nigeria complete the list.
