Bad Start At African Hockey Championships

Ghana suffered two losses at the African Hockey Club championships which begun in the South African capital of Pretoria on Monday.
Exchequers of Bank of Ghana were beaten 4-2 by host team, Wanderers in their first match at the championships. Two expertly converted penalty corners coupled with some defensive blunders were the undoing of the Bank Of Ghana backed Hockey team.

The Ghanaian champions were down under five minutes of play but leveled up and even took the lead through Alfred Armah. But a quick rally from the South Africans caught the Ghanaians napping from two penalty corners.
Exchequers’ loss compounded Ghana’s misery on match day one of the tournament after Fire Ladies, Ghana’s other representatives were trounced 3-nil by RAU of South Africa. The ladies were undone by their slow pace and inability to co-ordinate their game against the more energetic and skillful South Africans.

The competition enters its second day on Tuesday. Last year’s finalists Exchequers play Gaberoni of Botswana while Fire Ladies take on defending champions Telkom Ladies of Kenya.
