The honour, according to Magnus Rex Danquah, Chief Executive Officer of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the African Hockey Championship is in recognition of the President's outstanding interest in the game.

"The honour is in recognition of President Mills' outstanding interest in hockey which has extended from his school days to his present high status as the father of the Nation as well as his contribution to the development of the game on the continent." The honour is also to celebrate the President as a former keen hockey player whose exploits are recorded in the annals of Ghana hockey.
