Historic GH¢15,000 for Accra Open winner

All is set for the 2012 Accra Open beginning this Thursday at the Achimota Golf Club with the winner in the main event, professional men’s division assured an unprecedented GH¢15,000 prize money, Sportsinghana.com can exclusively reveal.

The premier event of the country’s premier golf club comes alive Thursday October 18 to Sunday 21 with the 62nd edition and according to Rene Kwame-Gameli, Captain of the Achimota Golf Club, the second competition under his tenure will also be the finest golf tournament staged in the history of the sport in Ghana. “It’s been good, last year for the first time in the history of the club, we gave GH¢10,000 to the winner and this year we are increasing it to GH¢15,000. The amateurs too will also win airline tickets, trophies, hampers and many more from our sponsors,” Mr. Kwame-Gameli told us in an exclusive interview.

The affable Achimota Captain continued: “So there is an improvement on last year in all aspects, in terms of participation, prizes and sponsors. This year’s tournament for me, will be the biggest and most successful in history of golf in this country.” The 62nd Accra Open tees off on Thursday with the professionals event who will play a total of 72 holes over 4 days with prizes at stake for the top 15, topmost being the historic GH¢15,000 cash prize.

Men and Ladies Scratch, Men and Ladies Handicap and Youth categories will all play 36 holes over two days, Saturday and Sunday.

There will be prizes for 1st to 7th in Men’s Scratch category whereas Ladies’ Scratch will reward the top 5 whilst Men’s Handicap division will see the top 5 get prizes and the Ladies’ Handicap division reward top three. 1st and 2nd prizes are up for grabs in the youth category with auxiliary prizes Longest drive on hole 14 and Nearest to the Pin on hole 12 also awarded. Sponsors include MTN, Virgin Atlantic, Kinross-Chirano, Guinness Breweries Limited, Goldfields Ghana Limted, Doscar Travel and Tours and others.
