Tema Captain wins own Lipton Bi-monthly golf

*Leonard Kweku Okyere, captain of the Tema Country Golf Club not only played the good host of last Saturday’s Lipton Bi-monthly tournament, but Mr. Okyere stood tallest on the competitive field as well. The Tema Captain beat Akwasi Poku and Ernest Opoku on countback into 2nd and 3rd places respectively after the trio finished on a net of 72 each, to win for the first time the competition sponsored by Unilever Ghana’s Lipton tea brand.*

“I am very glad and most happy that at last, being captain, I have been able to win this monthly medal sponsored by Lipton. I hope it will not be the last and I will win more. But I am enjoying the moment now,” Mr. Okyere told SportsInGhana.com moments after receiving literally from himself the trophy as his prize.

As well as 4th placed Oswald Amuzu, all the winners including the top three in the Ladies’ division, received a trophy each for their winning prizes. This among many others have left an impression on the Tema Country Golf Club Captain what good sponsors Lipton have been in the just over a year’s association with his club. “Lipton have been a great inspiration for Tema Country Club, we are grateful and we will continue as a club to have this cordial relationship with them,” Kweku Okyere said.

If it’s a continued relationship between Tema and Lipton, then Mr. Okyere need not worry. According to Francis Darko Afoani who spoke on behalf of Unilever at the prize-giving and closing ceremony, the company’s Lipton brand is committed to sponsoring the Tema bi-monthly medal for a long time to come.

“Everybody who uses Lipton aspires to be on top of their game. Our aim is to enrich the goodness of tea to our consumers. Lipton is a very healthy brand and its important that in the morning, afternoon and evening, you always take Lipton tea,” Mr. Akoani said of the product.

He added, amid the juiciest part to the Tema Country Golf Club and their bi-monthly competition: “I say congratulations to all the winners and better luck next time to those who didn’t win today. We promise to maintain the sponsorship and promise another great tournament in December.”

Grace Afriyie popularly called Tico who has won several tournaments already this year including this same competition back in May, reigned supreme in the Ladies’ category yet again. Mrs. Afriyie shot a net of 75 to beat Margaret Owusu-Baah (net 76) and Grace Amoah (net 78) into 2nd and 3rdrespectively.

Mrs. Owusu-Baah finished runner-up on the eve of her birthday, for which reason a Happy Birthday was sung for her in the hilarity of receiving her prize.

The Captain wasn’t the only one to praise Unilever, a former Captain of the club, Alex Fiagomey also hailed the support of Lipton. He pledged their continued appreciation to Lipton and Unilever. “I believe that our sponsors are feeling the effect of the patronage we are giving to the tournament,” Mr. Fiagomey added.

Leonard Kweku Okyere, the victorious host however reserved some few words of encouragement in pursuit of the top business executives and individuals to take up playing the game of golf, if for anything, its fairness and unpredictability.

“Golf is a game of equity, you can’t say you will win until the end of the game. So I am suggesting that even politicians and civil servants play golf. It is humbling and interesting,” Mr. Kweku Okyere stated to SportsInGhana.com.
