Pickings wins Achimota Medal golf

Accra, Oct. 6, GNA-Ron Pickings returned 64 net to win the Achimota Golf Club October Monthly Medal competition played at Achimota on Sunday. Pickings scored 42 In and 42 Out with a Handicap of 24 to beat a field of over 120 competitors in the game which also served as a farewell for Dr Magang Phologany, South African High Commissioner to Ghana who leaves for his country after a four-year duty tour. F.A. Asorgba came second with 71 net, beating David Owen on count-back, J.K. Kally was fourth with 72 points, while Jones Coffie placed fifth with 73 net.

In the Ladies category, Ama Morgann came first with 63 n et, Shobi Mapuranga was second with 68 net, Wilhelmina Aggrey took the third position with 71 net, while Jane Brown placed fourth with 72 net beating Mona Captan on count-back. The Professionals event was won by Paul Dossey with 72 gross. J.J .Harvey placed second with 73 gross and Emos Korblah took the third position with 75 gross while John Dorman was fourth with 76 gross. The one-day 18-stableford competition was jointly sponsored by Accra Brewery Limited, Multi-choice Ghana Limited and the club.

Mr Samuel Adetola, ,Captain of the Achimota Golf Club described Dr Phologany as a man of substance whose contribution to the club has made it what it is today. The club later presented a plaque to Dr Phologany.

At Tema, Samuel Duffour-Poku returned 71 net to win the club's October Medal played on Saturday where only two prizes were given. The other prize went to Eric Henaku who returned 72 net to place second. E. Gbesemate won the Seniors category with 73 net while Nana Owusu Afari took the second position with 74 net. Valentina Manteaw won the Ladies category with 71 net while Elizabeth Essel-Koomson was second with 75 net. About 100 golfers took part in the competition which was sponsored by Tema PSC Shipyard. Mr Abo Rahim Jafaar, Managing Director of the company assured the golfers that his company would continue to contribute to the development of the sport in the years ahead.
