Asantehene Open Golf Championship scheduled for May 21

Accra, May 5, GNA - This year's Asantehene Gold Cup Open Golf Championship tees off at the Royal Golf Course in Kumasi on Thursday, May 21 to Sunday, May 24.

Mr Kwasi Appiah, Vice Captain of the Royal Golf Club of Kumasi who announced this in Accra on Tuesday, said the four-day 72-Hole event, which was opened to both amateur and professional golfers from Ghana and other African countries, will be sponsored by MTN and Diageo with support from other co-sponsors and the Manhyia Palace. He said the event, which would be played in accordance with the rules of the World's golf governing body and the local rules of the Royal Golf Club, forms part of activities marking the 10th anniversary celebration of the ascension of Asantehene unto the Golden Stool. Mr Richard Acheampong, Senior Manager, Customer Experience and Branding Department of MTN said his company is sponsoring the competition as pat of its corporate social responsibilities. He described the Asantehene as a progressive chief whose leadership had brought many benefits not only to Asanteman but to Ghana in general.

"The exploits of the great King of Ashanti since he assumed the throne a decade ago, has united the Asante Kingdom and brought development and many benefits for which the company deems it fit to celebrate with him", he added.

Mr Achemapong expressed the hope that the sponsorship of the competition by MTN would further deepen the relations between the company and Asanteman.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene who is avid golfer himself would take the ceremonial tee-off before partaking in the competition.
