Appau -Oppong wins Quarteys Memorial Golf

Accra, April 26, GNA-Kofi Appau-Oppong returned a net score of 73, to win this year's P.D. and Sydney Quartey Memorial Open Golf Championship played at the Achimota Golf Course in Accra on Sunday. He was followed in the second position by E.M. Kwame with 74 net, while Kojo Butah placed third with 76 net, beating George Toall on count-back.

The Ladies event was won by Esther Amedzro with 78 net, Mary Asafo-Adjaye took the second position with 79 net while Suzie Abaloo-Kumasah came third with 80 net.

In the 54 Years and below event, Kofi Kusi-Boateng came first with 68 net, while Martin Bortei-Ddoku took the second position with 76 net, beating Augustine Irabor on count-back. The Ladies segment was won by Mona Myles-Lamptey with 74 net, while the second position went to Margaret Owusu-Baah with 75 net. The one-day 18-Hole competition, which was in memory of P.D. Quartey and his son, Sydney, both senior members of the Achimota Golf Club who passed away 20 and two years ago respectively, attracted about 100 golfers.

The event, which was sponsored by the family of the Quarteys, was opened to senior members of the club aged 55 years and above. Mr Mike Ezan, President of the Achimota Golf Club described the late Quarteys as members whose contributions had made the club, what it was today.

He appealed to members of the club to follow the shining example displayed by them for the promotion and the development of the sport Mrs Alberta Quartey, wife of Sydney, thanked the participants for the sportsmanship exhibited and gave the assurance that the family would continue to sponsor the event in the coming years.
