SHAIBU YAKUBU - Ghana's new boy wonder

The first part of Ghana premiership is about to end and the name on everyone’s lips is not Isaac boakye, Ember power but boy wonder Shaibu yakubu of Obuasi goldfields. The name shaibu will be new to others but for me is an old name full of great talent.

Days back at the grassless pitch at Boaitey a suburb of Obuasi, was where the name shaibu started making rounds. In a match between amagoase in the locally organized colts league at obuasi and with less than five minutes to end proceedings, shaibu’s team was down by a lone goal and in a matter of three minutes, shaibu was able to turn things around for his team by scoring two classic goals.

Although, the league is almost half way through, no one can underestimate the impact of this boy wonders scoring instinct in kinapharma league. Shaibu reminds of the days when Ishmael Addo burst on to the scene in grand style and was able to dominate and terrorize defenders on local scene and Africa at large. One hope shaibu will be the next Ishmael addo.

As a native of Adansi, it is heart warming that this is coming from my hometown and I hope everything will be in place for shaibu to make it to the top just as was done for Kamara Dini.

Ghana has the record of letting talents go waste, names like Nii Lamptey, Ransford Banini, Ben owu, Dan addo, Kelvin essien is no more heard and one hope this misfortune does not befall shaibu.

Shaibu’s mentor Abdul Issah rahman will be the first to admit that, sending shaibu out to play in the reserves side in Europe will be detrimental had it not been his sojourn in Italy, Abdul will have been the next Osei kuffour, although all is not lost yet. With one of Ghana’s best as the technical head of goldfields, coach Oti Akenten and the management of obuasi goldfields should try not to let the euro and dollar power sway them, to sell the new boy wonder.

For the GFA, I hope he is not rushed to play in top ranks but be made to mature with time and not to rush him to play for the seniors as in the case of the Alex opoku’s, Mallam yahaya’s, Christian sabba’s, Nana attakora and Emmanuel bentil.

My advice for shaibu is that he should always be focus and keep scoring because other young guys at Boaitey, tutuka and soccer academy are looking up to him.
