African youth in technology race … here’s why Africa will emerge

Commissioner for Insurance, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) in Nigeria, Mohammed Kari has said that there is no denying the fact that the changes in technology have affected most industries worldwide.

According to him, globalisation, which dominates the world presently, is being influenced mainly by information technology.

Well, it keeps getting better and better as African youth are now living their passion in Information Technology; an area Africa direly needs in its quest to evolve; And Ghana’s Francis Onuman Jnr, creator of the ‘Mascot Jump’ game is a big part of this fast growing trend.

Even more amazing is the fact that, 24 year-old Cameroonian Arthur Zang invented an incredible device Cardiopad which sends heart signals over a wireless network to assist heart patients in rural areas last year. The Cardiopad which is a touch screen is a medical tablet that enables heart examinations to be performed; after which the test results are sent via wireless network to specialists in other parts of Cameroon who can interpret them to make the necessary prescriptions.

Nigerian teenage brothers Osine Ikhianosime (13) and Anesi Ikhianosime (15) have also developed an Android web browser, Crocodile Browser Lite. The browser which is currently free has been described as “Intuitive, Clean and Fast” is said to have already had over 40, 000 downloads for feature and low-end phones. The teenage brothers revealed that they decided to create the browser because, “We were fed up with Google Chrome,” according to Vanguard.

Well, Francis Onuman probably not entirely bored with Zuma, Mortal Kombat and all the incredible games but dreaming to forge a career in Information Technology at 21 years has developed his second app the ‘Mascot Jump’on Google app store.

Francis, Arthur, Osine, Anesi are a few of the many emerging tech. giants from Africa and it will not come as a surprise if soon, Africa becomes a hub or myriad technological inventions.

Information technology (IT) has transformed the process of production, product design, raw materials sourcing, transport, manufacturing, health care, marketing, service delivery, entertainment, and even general management.

These current trends suggest that Africa will soon be the hub of technological inventions, a requisite move that can contribute to Africa’s emergence Hence, government should consider investing in youths who have nurtured their passion in this area and inspire a lot more to join the sector.
