NDC Congress: Rawlings to determine the winner

Sharleen Ofori for Network Herald

Political connoisseurs have determined that the “Rawlings factor” would play a huge part in the quest of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to choose the candidate who may make or break the party after election 2004.

The former president who is also founder of the party has been electrifying Mills’ campaign trails with speeches that have not made any secret of his support for Prof. Attah Mills. Using extensive images, Mr. Rawlings has advised delegates to the party’s national congress to be wise in their judgement for Attah mills because of his honesty and sincerity.

Mr. Rawlings whose political and indeed social future is intrinsically linked to the future and existence of the party and who continues to attract large crowds has insisted to followers of the party that having worked with a number of people, he knows the good and the bad and admonished against electing persons with dubious characters who will hijack the party for their own ends. He has also cautioned against the delegates and the party in general allowing persons with viscous character to wreck the NDC “because they are not different from the NPP.”

These sentiments have created political turbulence both within and without the party but the former president insists that these are schemes by the ruling party using the media to orchestrate the singing of the Requiem Mass of the NDC. The connoisseurs contend that no doubt, the NDC of yesterday has metamorphosed into a democratic institution from the days when it was a “Boys’ Scout with Jerry Rawlings as the Baden Powel.”

These and the unfortunate revenge sermon being preached by Dr. Botchwey who has threatened to pay back with compound interest, those who have maligned him, seem to suggest to the party that Dr. Botchwey instead of Mr. Rawlings would be the one to cause the disintegration of the party with a vengeful spirit. So far however, the clarion call of the vast majority of the party’s following seem to be Mills and 2004 or oblivion and that obviously means Jerry.
