I guess we remember P and T company and how this very company retarded the growth and development of telecom in this country and how by privatizing the industry Ghana had seen tremendous development in our telecom sector now every Ghanaian has a phone. That is what privatization and competition brings. Until we fully privatize the electricity and water sector this problem of unreliable supply will persist. After more than 50yrs of independence we have gotten worse.Until recently how many universities did we have in Ghana ? now because of allowing the private input there are so many of them,Our banking sector is also another good example. We need to understand that, Govt's are not good at running business because what ever belongs to the govt belongs to nobody and nobody cares if it works or fails

THIS IS THE MOST NON-SENSICAL SUGGESTION. ITS ABOUT TIME THE FOOLISHNESS OF SELLING OFF STATE ASSETS CEASES COMPLETELY. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO ENCOURAGE PRIVATE CAPITAL TO SET UP PLANTS TO COMPETE WITH THE STATE-RUN INDUSTRIES. YOU NEED TO ENCOURAGE COMPETITION, NOT PRIVATE MONOPOLIES WHICH IS WHAT THE SALE OF GOVERNMENT INDUSTRIES WILL RESULT, WITH HIGH SERVICE PRICES , EXCESSIVE PROFITS AND CRUEL ABUSE OF CITIZENS BY PRIVATE COMPANIES. JUST THINK ABOUT THIS WELL BEFORE YOU WRITE, NEXT TIME!!!

If it is money, some should be found and the cost recovered from tariffs slowly in a way to break even.
Foreigner come or not it is the same Ghanains they will work with. Hence there is no need since we have never ever thought of privatising parliament. Think of parliament if privatisation solves our problems

Wow!!! Nice one. A part of that, state institution must implement the checks and balance to avoid the sold out and bankruptcy. Unfortunately, the idea of capitalization is deepening in the head of many Africans scholars without proper comparism and analysis. What the institutions lack are good and incorruptible managers, some patriot ones who are neutral and willing to make the difference.
Since colonial time we have been selling almost all our properties to the west and foreigners just to be rubbed and left aside. What has all these brought to us? These people and companies did not even pay taxes, before they left.
Privatization is indeed globalization and it is not always help those indeed but rather the rich ones. Market your institution and its products well. Bring those criminals into prison, give those institution the chance to operate without fear and favor of any political party. The truth must be thought always. They must nationalist and patriots and of course very competent. pay them good as private market pay and have them under control.
This is the solution.

Privatization is a huge solution, if not the best solution, to all the electricity-related problems Ghana has been facing since Nkrumah left the political scene.
The huge manufacturing and service industries community in the world has more or less ignored a stable country like Ghana because of the way electricity and water supplies are managed in the country.
Citizens of Ghana can continue to allow their politicians to steal and do noting about it. And Ghana will continue to be a third world country.

The truth? You dont have to go far. Go to the UK. Before Margret Thatcher come to power the utilities in Britain were performing badly by British standards, nothing as bad as we have in Ghana though. She analysed the problem and quickly privatised the utilities one at a time. She started by giving all consumers the opportunity to buy shares in these companies, then with time, as consumers sold off their shares, they became privatised with many companies now able to sell power to consumers at competitive prices. Because there are many companies involved in retailing power and water and gas, the prices are competitive. Besides there are institutions set up to regulate the pricing of the products. This is proof that privatisation works. There is absolutely no way the state run institutions can run the utilities efficiently, it is not happening anywhere in the world and the earlier we woke up to this fact the better for us as a country. Do you think if private people were running Ghana Electricity company they will leave it in the state in which it is?, unable to collect outstanding debts and waiting on government to dole out more money to operate? Surely no!!! Privatisation is the only way.

Sorry, but i´m not one with all what you have said. Today many power supply companies in the UK meet to negotiate on what market price to be offering to the public. Once this deal done every competition die. I don´t see why the government can not sell some shares and power to companies on short contract basis to avoid overtaking?! These companies can distribute the energy to the people. Both the government and the private companies can offer the public their offers for the people to decide from whom they want to have their energy. It is also about quality services. But still the product energy will remain in the hands of the state.

You don't sell your house, because you have a problem at home. You face the problem and solve it.
We fail to take into consideration the long term strategic goals. We often want the easy way out, instead of facing the problem head-on.
The problems of Ghana Telecom (GT)and Ghana Water Company Limited were that of management and lack of government support.
When was the last time you ever heard that the top managers of a state owned company have been kicked out because of poor performance? NEVER. The various governments must also be blamed. When you don't adequately support a state owned company, how do you expect them to perform??
How much are they paying the foreign management companies?? If they paid their Ghanaian counterparts half (1/2)of that amount, can they not perform equally as good or better? Or don't Ghanaians have that management abilities??? (I want to know)

Privatizations do not always lead to the efficient provison of sevices at a cheaper cost to consumers. They are welcome if only such privatizations will not lead to the abnormal increase in the cost of services provided by these privatized companies. In the end it is the executives of these companies who benefit most by paying themselves huge salaries and bonuses whilst the poor consumers struggle to pay for the services of the privatized companies. Can that be avoided in Ghana where there are no strong, effective regulatory bodies to ensure that it does not happen?

I think the energy market needs to be deregulated to allow private companies to compete with the state owned company if they choose to remain in state hands. I can tell you that VRA and ECG will be bankrupt at some point as private companies are more efficient. We have seen TOR go out of business and the provision of refined products handled by privately owned BDCs who are more efficient than TOR. In the U.S. the govt doesnt get involved in business but serves as a regulator. Its time we adopted this approach.
